Bird Damage or Bird Hole Repair
Birds are amazing and some can even peck holes through stucco, creating a bird hole.
These holes may seem to be an insignificant problem from the exterior, but they allow for water ingress, which leads to many issues; plus, the insulation value in the wall cavity is greatly reduced.
In Calgary, generally, a woodpecker called the Northern Flicker is responsible for causing bird holes in buildings.
Northern Flickers are an amazing bird with impressive determination. And unfortunately, they’re endangered.
They are however common to Calgary and Alberta at large.
What should I do if I find a bird hole in my building?
If you spot a bird hole, call us quickly. Once a bird nest is established, it is illegal under Canadian law to disturb them (Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994).

We have tiered solutions to repairing bird holes:
Proactive:
Application of a much thicker (tougher) stucco layer.
There are products that provide a finish coat able to resist forces over 9x the average pecking force of a nesting bird.
This is a permanent solution that comes with a 10 year warranty.
Precautionary:
Weekly inspections and repairs.
Nesting holes are still in the preliminary stage.
With proper scheduling these regular visits will, in time:
- Deter the birds from nesting
- Discourage adults from returning each year
Reactionary:
Repair of nesting holes “as is / where is” for a fixed price.
Initially seems the least expensive option, but the drawback with this approach is how absolutely impossible it is to predict:
- Where and when the next nest will show up
- How many nesting sites there will be
This can become a constant game and the birds usually win.
